Fleur De Lis – Symbol of the New Orleans Saints


Question: What is the symbol for the New Orleans Saints called? The University of Louisiana at Lafayette also uses this same symbol.

Answer: The Fleur De Lis is the symbol and logo for the New Orleans Saints football team and also for the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. The Fleur De lis (singular form) and fleur de lys (plural form) is steep in french tradition. In french the word “Fleur” means flower and the word “Lis” means lily. So, it literally means “Lily Flower”. It is commonly used in areas formally settled by France. And since Louisiana and New Orleans fall into this category, you will see the fleur de lis design used throughout our state.

You can find the fleur de lis in many designs. If you look online I’m sure you will find the fleur de lis symbol in many different shapes, sizes and colors. It has been used on “Coats of Arms” and flags throughout the world. And these days it has become so popular that more and more companies, like Mignon Faget, which popularized the use of the symbol in earrings, necklaces and rings.
