Sport Science - The Golden Mask

I was on my drive around Louisiana today and was listening to WWL 870 when I heard them discussing a segment on ESPN. Apparently the segment pitted Peyton Manning against Drew Brees and the likelyhood of winning the Superbowl based on their facial features as well as some other aspects, such as the state where past Superbowl winning quarterbacks were born. Apparently the segment was titled “Sports Science: The Golden Mask”.

I did not get a chance to see the segment, but after listening to the radio announcers discuss it on WWL I thought to myself, “This sounds more like science fiction rather than actual sports science. I remember the video that was produced in which it highlights Drew Brees’ accuracy as compared that that of a World Class Archer. In fact I really enjoyed watching that segment and still do today. That video was titled “Sport Science” and if I recall correctly was made by Fox Sports Net (FSN). Since I did not get to see the ESPN segment, I am not sure if it was the same production company or just a nearly identical title.

As I stated above, it sounds like science fiction. Well apparently ESPN came to the same conclusion. All instances of the video segment have been removed from their website as well as other sites where they posted the video. These sites include the following:

    YouTube
    AOL Video

Saints Quarterbacks Coach Joe Lombardi

Saints Already Have a Lombardi

At this time the Lombardi happens to be in the form of a coach instead of a trophy. Joe Lambardi, grandson of legendary coach Vince Lombardi is the quarterbacks coach for the New Orleans Saints. Lombardi was promoted to the position on January 12, 2008. He had previously served as an offensive assistant where he worked closely with Pete Carmichael, Jr. who is now the Saints offensive coordinator. In Lombardi’s first year as quarterbacks coach Drew Brees passed for for 5,069 yards, which was just shy of Dan Marino’s passing record. Lombardi has also coached the Saints running backs briefly.

Lombardi came to the Saints in 2007 with substantial coaching expeience on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball. Prior to arriving in New Orleans, Lombardi served as a defensive assistant with the rival Atlanta Falcons. Before joining the Falcons Lombardi was the offensive coordinator and and recruiting coordinator at Mercyhurst College in Eerie, PA.

Lombardi started his coaching career in 1996 at the University of Dayton. While at Dayton Lombardi coached the defensive line. Unde his tutelage the Flyers won 20 straight games.

On Sunday, Lombardi has the chance to help the Who Dat Nation win the trophy named after his grandfather. In an interview during Tuesday’s media day in Miami Lombardi said, “If we win, there are a lot of people here who are going to touch that trophy before I get my shot at it. I mean, I’m pretty far down the totem pole.”

No matter how far down the coaching pole Lombardi thinks he is, we at Whodatsaint.com and all members of the Who Dat Nation pray that come Superbowl Sunday, Lombardi has the chance to touch, hug and kiss the trophy named after his iconic grandfather.

More information on Coach Joe Lombardi can be found on the New Orleans Saints Website

Not necessarily. Statistics show that since the 1970 merger of the NFL and the AFL there have been 20 instances of a team from the opposite conference winning the Superbowl as opposed to the conference team that won the Pro Bowl in the same year. There have been 19 instances of a team from the same conference as the Pro Bowl winner , winning the Superbowl in the same year. This makes it almost dead even. Since 2000 there have been only 4 times that a team from from the opposite conference as the Pro Bowl winner, has gone on to win the Superbowl.
